Welcome to The Black Student Union Website

TeKeyia Armstrong & Jared D. Childress
Hello,
Our names are TeKeyia Armstrong and Jared D. Childress. We are both fourth-year African-American Studies Majors and would like to welcome you to the Black Student Union for the 2009-2010 Academic Year! It is a privilege and an honor to serve as your 2009-2010 Black Student Union (BSU) Co-Chairs. Although we are fortunate to attend this great institution, it is challenging having such a small percentage of Black students on campus. Thankfully, over the years BSU has served as an excellent support system for black students at UCI. This organization not only functions as a social outlet and supportive environment, but is one that discusses past and present events that impact our community.
This marks a historic year, as this will be our first year in over thirty years that our organization is using its original and founding name of Black Student Union. Black Student Union, known as Afrikan Student Union for the past 15 years, was founded in 1971 for political reasons. This year BSU will focus on education, political activism, and outreach. Our 2009-2010 theme is “Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud.” This slogan was coined during the 1960s/70s Black Power Movement in order to instill a sense of pride and self-empowerment for all people of African descent. BSU welcomes anyone interested in black history and current events and anyone in need of a “home away from home.” Although we have come a long way, we must realize that many disparities continue to exist for all black people throughout the African Diaspora. We must challenge apathy and continue our ancestors’ legacy of fighting for social and structural change.
We are here for you! Please talk to us if you have any questions or concerns! We look forward to meeting you all!
See you at the meetings,
TeKeyia Armstrong & Jared D. Childress
